Stephanie Herseth is running for Congress again in 2004. She gained
national attention in 2002 in a tight race, when she was defeated by
former South Dakota Governor Bill Janklow 46% to 53%. Rep. Janklow
has not announced whether he will run again next year. He is facing
manslaughter charges arising from an automobile crash earlier this
year. Herseth's primary is June 1, 2004; at this point no other
candidates have announced they will seek the seat.
Herseth is a lawyer who grew up near Houghton, South Dakota, and is
currently working for the South Dakota Famers Union Foundation. When
asked why they favored Herseth in the race, the majority of those
polled responded that it was because they wanted a woman in Congress.
Herseth comes from a long line of South Dakota politicians -- her
grandmother was secretary of state, her grandfather was governor, and
her father served in the state legislature for 20 years.
