Emily Mathews is running as a Republican for Texas’s First District. The seat has been held by Rep. Max Sandlin, a Democrat, but the current redistricting by the Texas legislature has changed the seat to a 55% Republican district. Sandlin may decide to run in another district, leaving the First as an open seat. Four other Republicans are also running for the seat, but Mathews is the only woman, the only candidate under 40, and the only moderate.

Mathews is a former executive in the oil and gas industry and a recent Masters Degree recipient from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. She currently owns and operates Emily Mathews & Associates, a consulting firm advising clients on public policy and social issues as well as other business interests. In announcing her candidacy, Ms. Mathews said 'there comes a time when Americans must say enough is enough, reach out to claim our national destiny and fight back against the bitter partisan politics that paralyzes public discourse today."

Mathews is writing a book dealing with reforms necessary to upgrade our educational system in America, a major priority of her campaign. Other priorities include ensuring economic stability and viability in East Texas, Health Care and Medicare, energy sufficiency and encouraging self-reliance for all Americans.
