Dear
Susannah,
It is almost time for the Election!
|
|
 |
VOTE! |
|
|
|
Vote,
and get your friends to vote!
Election
2004 is upon us and we need to prove that women and young
people are voters to pay attention to, so make sure you
vote on November 2. And urge your friends to vote too!
Bring your girlfriends with you to the polls. Go drive your
grandmother to vote. Call and make sure your mom and aunts
and sisters and nieces are all voting. And while you are at
it, get the guys to go out there too! If you don't vote, you
don't have a voice. And if you don't have a voice in
politics, then the issues you care about won't get heard.
In 2000, twenty-two million single women did not vote.
Why don't young women vote? Most young, single women feel
like their vote does not count. Many elections in this
country have been decided by very few votes. In fact, women
won the right to vote in the United States in 1920 by a
single vote cast in the Tennessee legislature. And in 1960,
John F. Kennedy was elected President of the United States
by less than one vote per precinct. YOUR VOTE DOES COUNT!

Candidates Outraise Opponents!
Samara
Barend, running in the predominantly Republican 29th
district in New York, has outraised her opponent, Republican
State Senator John "Randy" Kuhl! She also has
twice as much money on hand as Kuhl does.
"The greatest strength of my campaign is the grassroots
support I have received," said Barend. "My
opponent received 75% of his contributions from special
interests groups - such as pharmaceutical, oil, and tobacco
companies - while 75% of my campaign contributions come from
individuals."
A recent news story about Kuhl is raising controversy in
this campaign. According to his ex-wife's divorce
complaint, he pulled a gun on his wife and threatened to
kill her during a dinner party in 1994. Kuhl and his ex-wife
call the release of these court- sealed papers "dirty
politics" and are blaming Barend's campaign. Barend's
campaign denies any link to the story. To read more about
these stories, click

Lisa Marie Cheney, challenging Democrat Jim Moran
for Virginia's 8th district (which includes Alexandria and
Arlington) has also outraised her opponent this quarter
according to the October 15th report released today by the
Federal Election Commission. It is rare for a challenger to
out-fundraise an incumbent. In the last fundraising quarter
of the election, Cheney raised a net of $120,555.43 while
Moran raised only a net of $114,127.44. Moran spent most of
his war chest on his primary against Democrat Andy
Rosenberg. "There is a groundswell from people looking
for an intelligent, experienced woman to represent them.
They know that a woman will represent them on health care,
education, taxes and homeland security differently than
Moran," says Lisa Marie Cheney.

Melissa
Bean and Laura McGiffert Slover
Melissa
Bean, who we supported in the 2002 election before she
turned 40, is running for Congress again in Illinois's 8th
District. Her opponent has been in office for 33 years. Bean
ran a close race against Crane in 2002, despite the fact she
was outspent 3 to 1. This race is incredibly close and we
wish her the best of luck.
