Background:
Rogette Harris grew up in the Greater Harrisburg area of
Pennsylvania where she began her political career at the age of 16.
Elected president of the Greater Harrisburg NAACP Youth Council, she
wrote legislation sponsored in the Pennsylvania House in 1999.
Rogette also won the NAACP Gloster B. Current National Leadership
Award three years in a row.
Rogette has considerable political experience, having worked on
campaigns and lobbied on the local, state and national levels.
She has also worked for both the Democratic Leadership Council and
the Democratic National Committee in Washington, DC. Currently
completing a master's degree in public administration, Rogette
Harris is a WUFPAC Woman to Watch!
A high school graduate of Bishop McDevitt High School in
Harrisburg, Rogette organized Pennsylvania's annual state youth
rallies that brought together youth from all over the state of
Pennsylvania. Martin Luther King III was among her keynote
speakers, and he honored her leadership in a special presentation in
2000.
During Rogette's high school years, she had her own column called
"Teenage Perspective" in a local Harrisburg newspaper
where she was able to give her perspective on current events.
She was also elected as a Senator and a statewide officer for
Pennsylvania's Youth & Government program, where she sponsored
three bills, one of which passed through the youth legislature.
Rogette graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 2003 with
a degree in political science. During her four years in
college, she was elected President of the University of Pittsburgh
Democrats and Chair of the Governmental Relations Committee (GRC) of
the Student Government Board. She was the first African
American to become President of the University Democrats.
In 2001, Rogette was appointed Affirmative Action Director for
Region II of the Young Democrats of America. During her
appointment, she organized statewide women's forums and educated the
public about affirmative action issues.
