Background:
Kathy Castor is the odds on favorite in the open, highly Democratic
Tampa Bay Florida Congressional District 11. Castor, 38, currently
serves as a county commissioner. Castor, who has two young children,
understands the challenges facing young women and families today,
particularly access to affordable health care, high quality education,
and clean air and water.
As the chair of the Children's Board Advocacy Committee, Castor
advocates for kids and families in the Florida Healthy Kids program,
high quality standards in Universal Pre-Kindergarten classes, and
greater opportunities for our kids after school and during the summer.
"As a member of Congress, I will be particularly sensitive to these
critical family issues," notes Castor. "As Chair of the
Hillsborough Environmental Protection Commission, I fight passionately
for clean air, clean water and sound growth management."
Castor is said to be independent-minded and has a reputation of
standing up to developers and corporations that ignore neighborhoods and
the natural environment. "Congress needs strong voices to reverse
recent environmental decisions that will negatively impact our
environment. Florida has much at stake in the national debate. We must
fight offshore oil drilling and protect Florida's beautiful coast,"
says Castor.
