Background: Kirsten Gillibrand is running for Congress in New York’s 20
th
district. She is the mother of a two-year-old son, and has deep roots
in the area. Gillibrand’s main campaign issues are cutting taxes for
middle class families and investing in economic development to bring
jobs and investment back to the 20
th District.
Throughout her career, Gillibrand has demonstrated her commitment
to public service. During the Clinton Administration, she served as
Special Counsel to the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development
(HUD), Andrew Cuomo. Currently a partner at Boies, Schiller &
Flexner, Gillibrand works on a wide range of legal and policy-related
issues, representing many pro-bono cases for those in need.
Gillibrand will be facing Morris N. Guller in the primary. If she
wins, she will be challenging first-term Republican incumbent, John
Sweeney. Although it is a 2-1 Republican district, the district has
been turning more Democratic, so this should be an interesting race.
Gillibrand has also raised $120,000 in her
first few months campaigning. This is the strongest effort by Democrats in
this district in recent history, but there is still a long way to go.
