Gabrielle Giffords has served one term in the Arizona
House of Representatives and two terms in the Arizona
State Senate, being the youngest female ever elected to the
Arizona Senate. Giffords has also worked for Price
Waterhouse and was the CEO of El Tire Campo, which is the
largest woman-run tire company in the United States.
Furthermore, Giffords has served on fourteen boards and
commissions in the Tucson/Southern Arizona area.
The race for the open seat in Arizona's 8th District has
become one of the most watched campaigns in the country.
According to a recent Washington Post article,
"In Arizona's 8th Congressional District, which
handicappers consider among the most competitive in the
nation, Democrat Gabrielle Giffords has raised almost
$600,000, more than twice as much as Republican Steve
Huffman." Giffords has also been endorsed by
Congressman Raul Grijalva, EMILY'S List, and major labor
unions including the International Brotherhood of Electrical
Workers, Arizona State Council of Machinists and Aerospace
Workers and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and
Trainmen.
Giffords graduated from Scripps College and has a Masters
of Arts in Regional Planning from Cornell University.
She is currently single but is dating NASA astronaut Mark
